Accounts Payable Processing Fundamentals

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will teach the student the accounts payable department functions, from the receipt of a purchase order to the payment of the invoice. Topics covered in the class include the logical process of work within the accounts payable department, the interaction and flow of information throughout the overall organization as it relates to the accounts payable department, internal controls related to the accounts payable function, processing of paperwork for the invoice packet from start to finish, preparation of 1099 reports and vendor statement reconciliation. Special topics such as purchase discounts, shipping costs, inventory purchases, capital asset purchases, blanket orders, partial orders, incorrect items received, incorrect pricing, credit/debit memos, and standard orders will be taught.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will receive a certificate of completion of the Accounts Payable-Entry Level course that lists the accounts payable subjects taken so as to present to prospective employers.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Accounts Payable has undergone rapid changes in the last five years, primarily attributed to the implementation of technology solutions.

In the last few years however, legislation such as Sarbanes-Oxley and the ongoing threat of terrorism have resulted in heightened awareness of the need to assess and formally document the internal control procedures for the A/P process.

Companies and organizations are under constant pressure to reduce cost and improve process and customer service. Many accounts payable departments are in various stages of both implementing automation through technology and assessing their internal controls.

This training program is intended to familiarize you with the fundamental features and functionality of the A/P processes whether the processes are supported with application software or are paper based. This knowledge will result in your being able to become productive more quickly through greater understanding of multiple accounts payable processes and internal controls.
